Organized in 1989 by artist and professor Marie Johnson Calloway, AOTAD sprang from a salon for African American artists known as Colors of Black.
Later n 1996, artists Jan Hart Schuyer and Rae Louise Hayward established The Art of the Living Black at Richmond Art Center with members of Colors of Black. Over the next several decades, the exhibition evolved, building larger audiences and gaining wider visibility. In 2019 the vision became broader and thus the organization was renamed to reflect that vision, now known as Art of the African.
